Sad but true

The famous 'glass ceiling' for women at the workplace (here workplace refers to college as well as offices) has been talked about a lot.As I grow more professionally, more and more I am begining to understand workplace inequity beyond the so called glass ceiling.

The subtle gender angle that comes in when comparing men and women at the workplace is so ingrained in the socials psyche for most of us, that we dont even think about questioning it.

Personal attributes for example, have differant connotations for men and women. The same, while celebrated in men, are looked down upon, when it comes to women.

While aggression in a man in the professional world earns him respect, and the title of being a serious go getter, the same earns the women totle of a bitch. Being vocal, honest and upfront is a quality in a man, and yet the same makes a woman emotional and hormonal.

And it doesnt stop at that. The most bizarre and ugly face of workplace inequality stems from people insisting on mixing a woman's professional and personal life.

When you cant bring the woman down by doing anything, the last resort is, shout on the top of your voice about people close to her.If the woman retaliates, she is being bitchy.

With only 4 girls in a class of 37, and being the only girl who has the guts to stand up, this girl is often the butt of jokes and centre of controversies when she comes up with an idea that is out of the box.Never mind that the idea is genuine, can work, and that shes by far the smartest of the lot whose actually making an effort to do things in a novel way.But later on, the same idea is took to the dean behind her back, and the dean pats these guys for being so innovative.

Now the situation is the girls name has been brought up in so many controversies that the dean is forever against her and as a result the girl has gone all quiet, watever happens.

What is the deal with equating a woman's personal life with the professional ? We know that social traits in general are looked at differantly for both the sexes. While aggression is encouraged, or to put it mildly, not discouraged in boys/men, the same are a strict no-no for women. Be gentle, be non-demanding, be good natured, be mild.Well I'd say the same should be universally held as benchmark for all people, be it men or women, if at all !!

There are numerous angles, if one looks at a woman's personal situation as well..how seriously her family takes her work, whether they actually appreciate her talent and hard work, or think of it as a stop gap arrangement before marriage and motherhood takes over. Thats an entirely seperate argument, so lets not even go there.

If we just take the example of any woman who chooses to be ambitious, its selfish apparently. Why ? Because her primary duty is towards her family, and as long as all that is in place, she is 'allowed' to explore having a career. And if her household duty demands that her career take a back seat, its not just expected, but the right thing to do. God forbid, but if she ends up with a career that demands long hours and hard work, how acceptable is it for the household to manage without her? Are systems encouraged that will let her worry about her power point presentation while the food lies uncooked at dinner time ?

And what does one say or hear of women who boldly say that they are dealing marriage or giving motherhood a pass in the interest of their ambitions? Heartless selfless bitch is right.

To sum it all up in one sentence,
The measure of a woman's success lies, not in her professional career, but in her cooking, and how well mannered she is.You could be the Secretary of United Nations girl, but if the shape of your rotis is not round, you will forever be considered unsuccessful.

Sad but true.

P.S. I do know that the post may sound extreme, but please take it as indicative of a general trend. Not to say things arent changing, but we do have a long way to go. And its important to sit back and reflect on our own attitudes and inherent biases once in a while.

I have felt him...

Just as air around me, like sky above my head, I have felt you with me in all the joys and sorrows. For all things I asked and you gave me, I am filled with gratitude.
For all those wishes which remained unfulfilled I was furious on you.Sometimes they shake my faith on you but you always gave answers for every why I had in my mind.Sooner or later, I got my answers.
You never said a word, but you answered me in the best possible way. With every answer, I became more firm about the bond we share. The bond we share is unique and one of its kind. From my experiences, now I understand I had been fool or silly at those times.
Like a stubborn kid asking for knife, I had been asking for wrong things! But like a mother who will let the child cry but will not give her knife, just for her safety. You thought more wisely about me than me.You made me realise that I am really blessed
Love you.....

A Happy V Day To Me

I am human too and this day is as special to me as any other human includin him,his loved ones, you all or any other random person.Yes..even if I am not loved by anyone..even if no one cares about the pain with which I live everyday...this day is imp and special for me too.Wish anyone could understand that.

I went out today...with my classmates..to celebrate...so what if no one loves me and no one gives a damn...Valentines day isint just a holiday for lovers. Its a festival to celebrate love for the people you are close to: friends, parents, siblings, mentors, even classmates.People usually associate it with just being a romantic occassion. Its about appreciating those closest to you, whether you are committed or single.I wont stop living just because some people are so insensitive when it comes to me,around me.

Since the day I have come here to do MBA somehow I lost touch with all my friends the way we used to.Today I messaged each one of them be it on phone or online and the whole day talked to them.Sourabh,mayank,andy,lucky,shai,gaurav...everyone.And I loved it :) Was like going back to the good old days

I did what valentines day is all about, showing love and kindness to someone you love...and I love myself even if others dont :)

Untitled.....

Circumstances change, people change, and you change. But, what if you start missing terribly, the 'old' you and the set of people that made you what you were sometime back ?

Someday, you get up and realise that, those people who constructed your past, are now just a small part of your present.Suddenly, you realise that everyone around you right now, are the people who are constructing your present. And you hate them all ? They dont value you and maybe thats why even you dont value them.

Another set of people are those, who were a part of your past, and are much more a part of your present. But they have changed, more than you could have ever imagined. They are the same people, and you love them like earlier, but there is something differant now. And that something, you are unable to understand. You are unable to figure it out after days of brainstorming. At the end, you are helpless, and accept them the way they are now, for the fear of letting them go takes over. You are helpless and hurt, and more than confused. You cant figure out what went wrong, and the confusion continues. For now, you seem to be alone. Life is not exactly what you had imagined it to be.

Kuki, stop expecting from people around you. And face the reality they are showing you every now and then. You dont matter to them. For God's sake stop believing that you do. It is not the way it used to be, no one is there to listen. Dont shed tears. They are hardly noticed.

11 facts about yours truly....

Okay I just felt like writing a differant post than what you guys have normally started finding here (My blog was a mix of everything, felt it had started becoming very one topic concious). So for all those people who are just my blogger friends and others who know me but still feel like reading it, here are 11 random facts about me.

1. I panic a little wenever I get into elevators/lifts.I am always in a hurry to step in/out, because I have a weird fear that I may not be fast enough and the doors will close and I'll be sandwiched !!!

2. I am very particular about thanking people for any service..say staff in supermarkets, restaurants, shops, on the road, anywhere. And notice it when others forget/refuse to say Thank you.It always irritates me a little bit.

3. I love celebrating people in my life and sharing their happiness/sadness. I am always more involved or enthusiastic as long as it is about someone else. I love fussing over people and putting them in the spotlight, yet hate it when the same is on me.I think of myself as a backstage extra actually.

4. My instinct is pretty strong, especially around people, and till date, has never proven me wrong. The vibe I get the first time I meet someone, has always proven to be true eventually. If I actually go with this instinct is something else entirely.

5. I dont do numbers. No counting, no money. Even after having done my 12th from PCM stream I am highly mathematically challenged.I hate numbers.

6. I am a city girl, totally.Yet, I hold my values dear to my heart and at the same time I am independent.I do my own thing.I care about people.I care about life and I am just not the person who would ignore people in pain.

7. I like touching. Yes, however awkward it may sound, I strongly believe that we all need human contactAt some point in time, we all crave for that loving hug, that sweet kiss, a peck on the cheek, the encouraging pat on the back, a hand on a shoulder, a comforting handshake.

8. Sometimes they claim that I am irrational or idealistic.I tend to believe in things that others generally dont because they are living in a rational world and are oh so realistic.I have my own logic behind things as to why it happened, if it happened or why a person acted a way, if he acted that way. Most of the time I end up having a differant opinion than others and to avoid conflicts I have learnt to just stop voicing them.

9. Lately I have become highly clumsy.I dont know how I do it, but I do it.Somehow I manage to drop an entire cup of coffee that I was holding tightly a moment ago.Spilling water, drinks, ketchup on clothes, table and floor comes naturally to me.Dropping my notebook, folder is a piece of cake for me.So much so, I am very good at dropping my own self too : Somehow I manage to fall from stairs or while walking on the road a little too frequently.I trip over my own foot, and land on the floor. But, worry not.I am getting good at finding immediate support with anything solid in the range.Does this embarass me ? Dont ask!!!

10. Joyous.Jumpy. Jolly. Ok, 'Hyper' is the word I am getting at. I have a very hyper personality.I have too much energy, which either makes people very happy with me or I end up intimidating them. I am very expressive when it comes to emotions. I will throw things when I am angry.I will cry when I am sad (err....I usually get angry when I am sad, so I cry and again throw things) and you do not want to see me happy and excited because I literally jump around all over the place.I dont know if its bad or good but thats who I am, and those who care about me, have learnt to appreciate me.

11. I am not necessarily conservative but I am a very spiritual person who have to have God in everything she does.Life doesnt make much sense without Him.

Dedication....

You were never in any of my plans. You never existed a year ago to me.My life was all about me and my family and my career and my friends and my studies and my...oh well, my life was just a big fat MY.

I dont think I liked you so much when I met you.I dont think I ever dreamed of waking up to see a calm serene face as it sleeps every morning.I dont think I ever thought of putting someones name behind mine and thinking of how would it sound.

I never dreamed of waking up to someones kisses .I never dreamed of unrequited love in my life, for did I not think that all love is conditional?

I never thought I would ask for anyones opinion before I did a thing.Never thought I wont do something simply because he doesnt like it.I never thought I could ever be so selfless or so loving or so caring or so tender.

I never thought, I would ever pray HIM for someones longevity.I never thought I could want living my life with this one single man by my side forever.

I was never a traditional person. Was always a big time feminist.Friends still refer to me as Kiran Bedi and Phooloan Devi :). I never thought I could listen to one single man so much.Never thought someones opinion would matter so much.

But I do all that now.Every of the above things.Even now, when I write of you, I write about myself.Unseen, unheard, you crept up into my life and I see that I am, who I am now, all pretences shed.I see how it feels when someone has the power of bringing tears to your eyes.

For a life gone by, I have but one regret. Why did you not meet me earlier? Why did you make me wade through all the wrong people in the world before we met ?
Why did you not bring out the best in me earlier like you do now ? Why did you not come by sooner, so that I could understand what it means to say I love you and mean it and what it means craving to hear I love you and knowing that it is more than just a statement, that it is a promise, a committment, a lifetime, a sense of togetherness, something that says that I will forgo my happiness to see you happy. Why cant you be mine, in the next birth too ?

Something..somewhere....

A smile on my face,
A tight embrace,
A shoulder to lean on,
A mind so calm,
A hand to hold,
A peaceful soul,
A long walk,
A soothing talk,
A dream in my eye,
Or a reason to feel high,
A tender touch,
I dont know how much,
Something,somewhere,seems to be missing.......
Sometimes it just happens !

Echo of this silence

When I lose you, my love
I am scared, not of
Years spent
And neither shall I
Find myself unable to live without you

(I'll be strong and move on
And all that, you know!)

What does scare me, love
Is the thought of
My dreams, trashed-
Rendered pointless
Of Pain excruciating,
But meaningless
Of a pain that will, dim with time
But wont fade away

There are things you are not supposed to
Talk objectively about
And I dread being talked of
Objectively- as a temporary part of your past,
As your past,
Like a long-forgotten taste of
Your favourite flavoured coffee

And sunshine, dont let my memory
Come as a lump of guilt
Or a pang of heartache
Or a moment of sundown
Let it play, in the twitch of your smile

And promise me,
That a part of me, will continue to live in you
And I swear that,
A part of you, shall forever be in my soul
